Somali Women and Children’s Support Network

The Somali Women and Children’s Support Network was established in 1992 and has been serving the City of Toronto and surrounding area for over 20 years. This organization is mandated to provide a broad range of programs, services and supports to enable immigrants, refugees, newcomers and low income women and their children to gain leadership skills, employment training, and language skills, as well as to build social connections within and beyond their community. As these immigrant women face enormous barriers such as housing, language, culture, education, and employment, the SWCSN has been successful with programs which help to alleviate their isolation by building upon their social network.

The ultimate goal of SWCSN is to move women towards a sustainable livelihood, and full economic, social and cultural participation in the Canadian community. Our services are targeted towards women who are immigrants and newcomers, have no skills, are unemployed, lack education and have low income levels. Our program activities include: ESL classes; information workshops on parenting, nutrition, health, violence against women and social issues, seniors’ service (accompaniment to appointments, assistance with applications, etc.), interpretation referral services; and job readiness & self employment program. We also have summer programs initiatives for children and youth within the community. Furthermore, we provide youth programs and childcare services.
